    Shiv is a second-year student studying Biochemistry and Economics. He’s especially interested in biosecurity and animal welfare, and works in a virology lab. Outside of EA, he enjoys playing tennis, cooking, and reading philosophy.

    Alexandra is a junior studying Philosophy, Psychology, and Political Science. Within EA, she is particularly interested in Global Health and Development, and has previously led the corresponding Fellowship. After graduation, she hopes to pursue a PhD in Social Psychology. Outside of EA, she enjoys reading, running, cooking, and spending time with her friends.

    Rory is a senior studying Mathematics and Philosophy. He is especially interested in the use of mathematical and statistical reasoning to solve important problems in the world, and in spreading the general ethos of the EA community to larger society. Outside of EA, he likes to swim regularly, read classical and speculative literature, self-study math, and occasionally write poetry.

    Chiara is a junior at UW-Madison majoring in Economics and Statistics. She serves as the Finance Coordinator for Effective Altruism where she manages the organization’s budget, tracks expenses, and helps prepare funding proposals and presentations. She’s especially interested in how markets and financial systems can be leveraged to drive positive, large-scale impact. Outside EA, she enjoys reading, chess, hikes, and cooking.

    Michel Justen

    he/him

    Michel co-founded EA UW in Fall 2020 alongside his twin Lenni after hearing a podcast episode, as one does, and graduated from UW-Madison in 2022 with degrees in Neurobiology and Psychology. He now serves as AI Grants Lead at the Tarbell Center for AI Journalism, supporting journalism that helps society navigate advanced AI. He’s happy to chat with all EA UW members!

    Lenni Justen

    he/him

    Lenni co-founded EA UW–Madison in 2020 and graduated in 2022 with a B.S. in Physics and Political Science. He is now a PhD Candidate at MIT and the Broad Institute, advised by Pardis Sabeti and Kevin Esvelt, and serves as a Research Manager at ERA Cambridge on AI and biology. His research focuses on detecting emerging pathogens through wastewater metagenomics and suppressing transmission in built environments.

    Reid Kuenzi

    Reid joined EA UW leadership in 2022 and served as President from 2024 to 2025, graduating in 2024 with a degree in Electrical Engineering (Machine Learning & Data Science) and a certificate in German. His AI safety work has spanned the Wisconsin AI Safety Initiative and the Center for AI Policy; he now works as a Public Service Engineer for the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin. He remains passionate about helping others maximize their positive impact—when he's not sailing, reading, or getting into deep philosophical discussions with friends.

    Aaron Yarmel

    Aaron Yarmel (PhD, MSc, MA) is Associate Director of the Center for Ethics and Human Values at Ohio State, where he oversees program operations and leads initiatives on dialogue facilitation, civil discourse, and the ETHOS Fellows program. His academic research spans two-level utilitarianism, social change, and the philosophy of education. He earned his PhD in Philosophy from UW–Madison, founded Madison Public Philosophy, and has been an active EA contributor since 2015. He has contributed through his research, as a guest speaker and workshop presenter, and as an EAGx conference organizer. He also maintains a private consulting practice in philosophical counseling and facilitation.

    Emma is the Development Director at Animal Charity Evaluators, overseeing fundraising for their Recommended Charity Fund and Movement Grants. Before joining ACE, she served as COO at One for the World and spent four years running corporate campaigns at Mercy For Animals, a global farmed animal protection nonprofit. She has been an active EA community member since 2016, helping organize EAGxMadison, attending EA Global conferences, and working with affiliated animal advocacy organizations and groups. She welcomes chats with EA UW members or in person in Madison.

    Holly graduated from UW–Madison with degrees in Economics and International Studies and a certificate in Art History. Her interest in global welfare led her to a research internship with the World Justice Project in Washington, D.C., where she focused on the rule of law and international development. She remains especially passionate about reducing extreme global poverty and the fight against preventable diseases. Currently, Holly is working as a Business Development Assistant at Kirkland & Ellis. Outside EA, she enjoys yoga, going for walks and hikes, trying new recipes, and hanging out with friends.

    Erica graduated in Fall 2025 with degrees in data analytics and consulting in the school of business. She has been involved as an EAUW executive since 2023 and is passionate about expanding our ideas to new members. Originally from San Francisco and currently working in New York, she recently completed a semester abroad at the National University of Singapore.

    Kenneth is a PhD student at Carnegie—Mellon University in the Social and Decision Sciences. He wishes to alleviate suffering for all sentient beings, and he is firmly committed to liberty and equality, animal rights, and veganism. In his free time, he writes a blog, plays Minecraft, and hangs out with friends.

    James graduated from UW–Madison with a triple major in Biochemistry, Neurobiology, and Economics. He's particularly interested in mental health as an EA cause area as well as longtermist and transhumanist research, specifically involving neural mechanisms and consciousness. James will be heading to New Haven as an incoming MD candidate at the Yale School of Medicine. When he isn't in the clinic or the lab, you can find him on the volleyball court, playing ultimate frisbee, or wilderness camping.

    Akhil is a PhD student in Cybersecurity at University College London (UCL), where he works within the Center for Doctoral Training to mitigate technology-facilitated abuse in Smart Home and IoT ecosystems. He holds a Master’s in Computer Science from UW–Madison and a Bachelor’s from the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. He has been actively involved with the effective altruism community for several years now through the facilitation of virtual programs. He is especially interested in reducing existential risks from Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and Engineered Pandemics.

    Harmon is a graduate of UW–Madison, where he studied Computer Science and Economics with a focus in Bioinformatics. His work sits at the intersection of machine learning, biosecurity, and entrepreneurship. Currently, he is the Co-Founder of a stealth startup backed by Y Combinator, based in New York City.
